Indian American ophthalmologist receives excellence in education award

Goyal serves as the director of Medical Student Education at the Kresge Eye Institute

Anju Goyal, a distinguished professor of Ophthalmology, Visual and Anatomical Sciences at Michigan’s Wayne State University School of Medicine, has been honored with the 2023 Excellence in Medical Student Education Award.

The accolade, bestowed annually by the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO) on a singular recipient, acknowledges an exemplary educator, mentor, or advisor for their unwavering dedication to medical student education.

Goyal's commitment, innovative approach, and leadership in advancing medical student education in Ophthalmology, both regionally and nationally, were highlighted by the AUPO.

Expressing her gratitude, Goyal remarked, “I feel very thankful and honored to receive this award. I feel so thankful to contribute to the education of our future generation of physicians, so that they can thrive and provide excellent care to the public and patients we serve.”

Having joined the Wayne State University faculty in 2005, she emphasized her aspiration to inspire students to recognize their inherent talents and make valuable contributions in their careers. Goyal was presented with the award at the AUPO annual meeting held in February.

Apart from her role as a professor, Goyal serves as the director of Medical Student Education at the Kresge Eye Institute. Her association with the institute extends to her completion of an Ophthalmology residency and Glaucoma fellowship training. Since 2011, she has served as the director of the Ophthalmology clinical elective for WSU medical students.

Goyal is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and the Wayne State University School of Medicine Alumni Board of Governors. Among her notable achievements are the School of Medicine’s Excellence in Clinical Science Teaching Award and College Teaching Award, the American Academy of Ophthalmology Secretariat Award and Distinguished Service Award, the Lawrence M. Weiner, M.D. Award for teaching and service, to name a few.
