Indian American students were among hundreds who graduated from Rutgers University last weekend, as the institution marked its 259th Annual Commencement at the SHI Stadium in New Brunswick.

The ceremony brought together members of the Class of 2025 from across the globe, along with families, friends, and faculty, to celebrate years of academic effort and achievement.

Indian American graduates were a visible and vibrant part of the event and were representing both their cultural heritage and their academic accomplishments. Among them was Oways Jaffer, who graduated with a degree in Computer Science. "His joy and pride mirrored that of many Indian American students who have made significant contributions to the university's academic and cultural landscape," the university said in a statement.

New Jersey is home to one of the largest Indian American populations in the country, and Rutgers has long been a top choice for students from the community. The university is also home to the Indian Students Association at Rutgers University – Newark, which promotes Indian culture and diversity on campus and provides a platform for students to connect around shared heritage.

Earlier this year, in March 2025, a university-wide delegation from Rutgers visited India as part of a broader strategy to expand its global partnerships. The trip focused on building research collaborations, exploring student mobility programs, and deepening ties with India’s academic institutions.

One major outcome of the visit was a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Rutgers Executive Vice President Prabhas Moghe and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore. The agreement is expected to open new avenues for joint research and academic exchange between the two institutions.
