India abstained from voting on a United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and urging member-states to implement an arms embargo on Israel.

The resolution, titled 'Human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the obligation to ensure accountability and justice,' was adopted by the Geneva-based UNHRC. It garnered support from 28 countries, while India was among the 13 nations that abstained, alongside Japan, The Netherlands, France, and Romania.

It aimed at ending Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, since 1967. It also demanded an immediate lifting of Israel's blockade on the Gaza Strip and cessation of all other forms of collective punishment.

The resolution condemned actions by Israel that may constitute ethnic cleansing in Palestine. It emphasized the urgent need for the restoration of basic necessities to the Palestinian population in Gaza and called upon all states to continue providing emergency assistance.

The UNHRC resolution also denounced the targeted killing of civilians in Hamas's Oct. 7, 2023, attack in Israel. It demanded the immediate release of remaining hostages and stressed the importance of providing immediate humanitarian aid in accordance with international law.

India's votes at the UNHRC session indicated its backing for three resolutions that criticized Israel for human rights violations against Palestinians, supported the Palestinian right to self-determination, and condemned Israel’s control of Syrian Golan, a region it has held since 1967.

These developments came in the wake of escalating tensions, including the killing of seven international aid workers in Gaza by Israeli strikes and a military strike by Israel on the Iranian embassy in Syria.

All four resolutions were presented by Pakistan on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
