IIT Bombay, Columbia University to launch AI center
The MoU was signed and exchanged at an event held in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Columbia University signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the Columbia–IIT Bombay Center of AI for Manufacturing, a joint initiative focused on applying artificial intelligence to real-world manufacturing systems.
The MoU was signed and exchanged at an event held at New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The delegations were led by IIT Bombay director Shireesh Kedare and Columbia University senior vice provost Soulaymane Kachani. Also present were Vishal Misra, vice dean for computing and AI at Columbia Engineering, and Mani Bhushan from IIT Bombay’s department of chemical engineering, who are leading the initiative.
According to the Ministry of Education, the Center is a joint research and translation hub aimed at developing robust, scalable, and human-centric AI systems for manufacturing applications. The Center is expected to work closely with industry, with several industry partners currently in the process of joining.
The Ministry of Education has so far initiated four AI centers, with the Columbia–IIT Bombay Center of AI for Manufacturing being the latest addition under this effort.
The signing was also attended by Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar, Secretary (Higher Education) Vineet Joshi, Secretary (School Education and Literacy) Sanjay Kumar, and Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, S. Krishnan.
The agreement with Columbia University follows a series of recent international academic engagements by IIT Bombay. On Feb. 16, IIT Bombay hosted a delegation from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for academic discussions and to formalize a proposed undergraduate exchange program.
The visit included leadership meetings, curriculum discussions, and faculty presentations and concluded with the signing of an MoU for the IIT Bombay–UIUC Undergraduate Cohort Exchange Programme.
