HindiUSA Saint Louis hosts Annual Hindi Poetry Meet

The event involved participation from over 130 children aged 5 to 15 years, representing different academic levels.

HindiUSA Saint Louis organized its 8th Annual Hindi Poetry Competition on Jan. 18 at the Mahatma Gandhi Center in Missouri.

HindiUSA is a New Jersey-based registered nonprofit organization and one of the largest Hindi and Indian cultural organizations in North America, serving 4,000+ students through 29 schools.

The event involved participation from over 130 children aged 5 to 15 years, representing different academic levels.

Among them, 25 students were declared winners in their respective categories, while 27 additional students received the “Emerging Star” award.

Students recited several popular and classical Hindi poems, including “Koshish Karne Walon Ki” and Ramdhari Singh Dinkar’s “Krishna Ki Chetawani.” Many participants wore special costumes and traditional attire in accordance with their performances.

The event commenced with welcome remarks by the founders, Mayank Jain and Anshu Jain, followed by the national anthems of India and the United States.

A tribute was then paid to the late Ashok Kumar, a community leader for the Indian diaspora in St. Louis and a philanthropist who supported several local institutions. Attendees observed a moment of silence in his honor.

Vivek Malek, from the Office of the Missouri State Treasurer, the 48th State Treasurer of Missouri and the first Indian-American to hold a statewide elected office in the state, was in attendance, along with Gilberto Pinela, from the Office of Mayor Cara Spencer, City of St. Louis.

Five distinguished guests from India also joined the event virtually via Zoom.

Participants included Bipin Kumar, National General Secretary of Vishwa Hindi Parishad (New Delhi), D. P. Mishra, National Vice President, Vishwa Hindi Parishad, P. K. Purohit, Dean (International Relations), NITTTR, Bhopal, Mohammad Zakir Hussain, Senior Journalist (Bhilai, Chhattisgarh) and Kaushal Gondavi, Hindi research scholar at the University of Delhi, who also recited his poem live from New Delhi.

Former HindiUSA teacher, Ritu Maheshwari, and Falgun H. Dave fromthe  Federal Reserve Bank, USA, were the judges for the event.

The event concluded with Mayank Jain congratulating all participants, followed by thanking the teachers and volunteers for their service.
