Consul General Pratik Mathur said yoga continues to serve as India's gift to the world and highlighted its role in promoting physical health, mental well-being and active ageing.
The program included a guided meditation session led by Sister Sapna of the Brahma Kumaris and a yoga demonstration featuring breathing exercises, asanas and meditation techniques.
The event also showcased Indian culture through a Manipuri dance performance inspired by Khongjom Lal, a traditional ballad associated with the 1891 Battle of Khongjom. The presentation highlighted the cultural heritage of Manipur as part of the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative.
A classical music recital by flautist Rajat Prasanna, accompanied by tabla and Chinese musicians, added an Indo-Chinese cultural element to the celebration.
The Shanghai event marked the culmination of a series of yoga programs organized by the Consulate General of India across eastern China in the lead-up to International Day of Yoga.
Participants engaged actively throughout the sessions, reflecting strong interest in yoga as a holistic wellness practice. The event also underscored growing cultural engagement between India and China through shared appreciation of traditional health and wellness systems. Officials noted continued efforts to expand yoga outreach across the region in coming years.
The United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014 following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The annual observance is now celebrated in countries around the world.
