San Francisco law school names Manoj Viswanathan interim provost
As the chief academic officer of the law school, Viswanathan will oversee the institution’s complete academic program, including faculty, centers, curriculum, student-facing departments and the student experience from orientation through postgraduate bar preparation.

Indian-origin tax law professor Manoj Viswanathan has been named the interim provost and academic dean of the University of California Law San Francisco (UC Law SF).
Viswanathan, who has been a member of the UC Law SF faculty for more than a decade, will assume the position starting in January 2027. He succeeds outgoing Provost and Academic Dean Morris Ratner.
As the chief academic officer of the law school, Viswanathan will oversee the institution’s complete academic program, including faculty, centers, curriculum, student-facing departments and the student experience from orientation through postgraduate bar preparation.
Viswanathan joined the UC Law SF faculty in 2015. During his tenure, he has helped shape the College’s academic offerings by co-founding the Center on Tax Law, creating or co-creating experiential tax law courses such as the Business Tax Practicum and Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, and publishing influential scholarship on tax policy, inequality and economic mobility.

An award-winning teacher who has been named the Joseph W. Cotchett ’64 Professor of Law, Viswanathan now brings that experience to a leadership role focused on guiding the College’s academic mission, the university said in a statement.
Sharing his top priorities for the role and his vision for the future of academics at UC Law SF, Viswanathan said, “As a regular faculty member, it’s hard to stay on top of all the amazing things my colleagues are doing.”
“As provost & academic dean, acquiring this institutional knowledge is part of the job. I’m very much looking forward to learning more about how the pieces of our institution fit together,” he said.
