Indian American lawmaker Ro Khanna said he is proud of his grandfather, who fought alongside Mahatma Gandhi in India’s freedom movement, responding to an X post by American conservative radio host Jesse Kelly that praised colonization.

Kelly shared a post on X that read, “Make Colonization Great Again,” arguing that colonization was one of the greatest things to happen to what he described as the “backwards parts of the world.”

The former congressional candidate and U.S. Marine Corps veteran wrote, “Colonization is one of the greatest things that ever happened to the backwards parts of the world and the only reason most don’t know this is because they were educated by communists who hate Western civilization.”

In response, Khanna said the political commentator had interpreted history “backwards,” citing Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi and his influence on Martin Luther King Jr. as “one of the greatest things that ever happened to America.”

Khanna added that, as an American born in Philadelphia, he is proud of his grandfather, who was imprisoned during Gandhi’s freedom movement.

In a separate post on X, Khanna also addressed the U.S. military operation in Venezuela, Operation Absolute Resolve.

Khanna wrote that President Donald Trump had betrayed his MAGA base by launching what he described as “a war of choice to bring regime change in Venezuela.”

He said the administration was prioritizing conflicts abroad instead of addressing persistent domestic issues, including a lack of jobs and rising living costs.

Khanna said the moment calls for a movement of the American people to stand against what he described as “bloated defense budgets and warmongering.”

He added that Americans need leaders who follow the advice of George Washington and the nation’s founders by investing in jobs, health care, child care and education.
