Rep. Ro Khanna described New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as "a student of history," praising his decision to deliver a July 4 address from behind George Washington's desk and calling it a powerful affirmation of the country's founding ideals.
The Indian American congressman made the remarks in an interview clip shared by RNC Research, the research arm of the Republican National Committee. Khanna later confirmed the comments by responding to the post on his X account.

Asked for his reaction to Mamdani's address, Khanna said, "I'm glad he did it. It's showing that the same country that produced Donald Trump produced Zohran Mamdani."
Khanna added, "It was significant he did that with George Washington's desk, with New York being the first capital of this country. People often don't remember that. Zohran knows that."
He said Mamdani had linked the country's founding ideals to modern America, describing the speech as "a powerful message" rooted in the Declaration of Independence.
"The Declaration says that we have equality for every person and that this is a nation really that is based on that creed and has welcomed immigrants," Khanna said. He added that Mamdani was "claiming that vision as true patriotism and inspiring, and it's going to resonate across the country."

Mamdani, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Uganda to an Indian-origin mother and Ugandan father, delivered the address on July 3 from New York City Hall, seated behind the historic George Washington desk and surrounded by recently naturalized citizens, according to CNN. In the speech, he said the nation's founding values "are strong enough to endure any authoritarian regime, but only if we reach for them," adding that the United States is "a nation working each day toward the perfection in which it was conceived."
Khanna campaigned for Mamdani during his mayoral campaign, according to the video shared on X.
