Valley Health System, a regional healthcare system that serves residents in northern New Jersey and southern New York, has appointed Indian-American physician Puneeta Sharma, as vice president and chief medical officer (CMO) for Valley Medical Group.
In her new role, Sharma will oversee the operations, physicians, and staff across all specialties within Valley Medical Group, including primary care, pediatrics, cardiology, general surgery, hematology/oncology, women’s services, advanced practice nursing, and several medical subspecialties such as endocrinology, gastroenterology, and pulmonology.

Sharma will also oversee Valley’s Office of Academic Affairs and support the chief academic officer in advancing the health system’s graduate medical education programs, which are sponsored by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, as well as research initiatives.
“I am honored to serve as vice president and chief medical officer and to support the physicians and staff across Valley’s many specialties. I look forward to collaborating with our teams and ensuring every patient receives compassionate, high-quality care,” Sharma said.
Valley Health System president and chief executive officer Robert Brenner, welcomed the appointment, saying Sharma’s promotion reflects the increasing scope of her contributions to the organization and her addition to the executive leadership team.
Sharma joined Valley Health System in 2017 as director of Palliative Care. She was appointed chair of medical specialties for Valley Medical Group in 2019, overseeing programs including pulmonary critical care, dermatology and rheumatology. In 2022, she became chief medical officer for Valley Medical Group.
Throughout her tenure, Sharma has played a key role in strengthening specialty care services and supporting clinical excellence across the organization.
Sharma is board certified in internal medicine, holds a subspecialty certification in hospice and palliative medicine, and is a Certified Physician Executive through the American Association for Physician Leadership.
She holds a master’s degree in healthcare management from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Massachusetts and earned her medical degree from Karnataka Medical College in Hubballi, India.
