U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Port of Buffalo’s Peace Bridge border crossing arrested an Indian citizen wanted by authorities in India for murder.
Vishat Kumar, a 22-year-old citizen of India, was apprehended on Nov. 16 after he was denied entry into Canada and referred for inspection at the Peace Bridge crossing between Buffalo, New York, and Fort Erie, Ontario. During a secondary inspection, officers determined that Kumar was attempting to conceal his identity.

According to CBP, biometric technology confirmed Kumar’s true identity, revealing that he had used a false name and date of birth. Further checks showed that Kumar was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice issued by Indian authorities in connection with a murder case.
CBP also said Kumar had illegally entered the United States in 2024 and failed to appear for a scheduled asylum interview.
“The apprehension of this individual demonstrates the critical role our officers play in safeguarding our nation and working collaboratively with international partners to uphold justice,” Acting Area Port Director Sharon Swiatek said.
“This arrest highlights our commitment to ensuring that those who attempt to evade accountability for serious crimes are identified and brought to justice,” he said.
Following his arrest, Kumar was processed by CBP officers and transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, the agency said. He is currently being held at the Federal Detention Facility in Batavia, New York, while awaiting removal proceedings from the United States.
