Padubidri V. Shivaprasad, of the National Centre for Biological Sciences, won the Food Security category for developing epigenetic and small RNA-based engineering techniques in rice to improve stress tolerance and nutritional value, addressing pressures from climate change and shrinking farmland.

Balasubramanian Gopal, from the Indian Institute of Science, received the Sustainability award for creating a green chemistry platform that uses bioengineered E. coli and AI tools to produce chemicals used across pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and agriculture, reducing pollution and energy consumption.

Ambarish Ghosh, also from the Indian Institute of Science, earned the Healthcare prize for advancing magnetic nanorobots capable of navigating the body to deliver targeted cancer therapies, offering the potential for less invasive treatment with fewer side effects.

“The scientific advancements achieved by this year’s winners—on creating climate-resistant crops, sustainable bio-manufacturing, and targeting cancer with fewer side effects—are the result of years of dedication and sacrifice. Their work is significant for India and for humanity at large,” said N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons.

“The Tata Group has long believed that science and technology pave the way for larger human progress, and we are proud to support this year’s winners in their endeavor to push the frontiers of excellence,” he added.

“The Tata Transformation Prize celebrates scientific breakthroughs with the power to address pressing societal challenges while fostering economic progress and global impact,” added Nicholas B. Dirks, president and CEO of The New York Academy of Sciences. “The 2025 winners exemplify the power of Indian science to drive meaningful global change.”

Each recipient will receive $228,000 (INR 2 crores) to advance their research. The winners were selected from 212 nominations spanning 27 Indian states, with an international jury set to honor them at a ceremony in Mumbai in Dec. 2025.

Established in 2022, the Tata Transformation Prize supports high-risk, high-reward scientific research aimed at improving quality of life in India and beyond.
