Silicon Valley Indian-origin billionaire Vinod Khosla has highlighted the progress the world has made in fulfilling his 2012 prediction that machines would replace doctors in 80% of their work.
Khosla is the co-founder of Sun Microsystems and the founder of Khosla Ventures. He has a net worth exceeding $10 billion and is considered by many to be a bold tech visionary. Khosla spotlighted his prediction on doctors as part of a long thread on his largely successful forecasts, barring a few exceptions.

He reminded his followers, “In 2012, I predicted machines will replace ~80% of what doctors do, leaving humans to do the human element of care. Today: Studies show AI outperforming doctors in both diagnostic accuracy and empathy across several specialties.”
Khosla cited data from an NPJ Digital Medicine publication and a National Library of Medicine–published study highlighting the expanding role of AI in health care. The studies note that such tools have not only improved efficiency by easing note-taking and performing other clerical tasks, but have also changed diagnostic medicine by entering fields such as patient empathy through AI chatbots and the use of deep learning to analyze test results and improve diagnostic accuracy.
Khosla also addressed the future of medical care, saying, “When machines exceed human performance on skill and bedside manner, the future will arrive faster than expected.”
Apart from his prediction on health care, Khosla also listed other forecasts he said have proven accurate, including the rapid growth of coding in natural languages and increased access to AI tutors.
