The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued a notice to social media platform X, asking it to remove obscene content amid government concerns over the misuse of Gork AI  to create and share explicit material.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Compliance Officer of X, India operations, the ministry said the Grok AI service is being misused by users to create fake accounts to host, generate, publish or share obscene images or videos of women in a derogatory or vulgar manner.

The ministry further clarified in the letter that regulatory provisions under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Information Technology Rules, 2021, are not being adhered to by the platform.

It emphasized the importance of compliance with the IT Act and the IT Rules, 2021, stating clearly that such compliance is not optional.

The ministry has sought an action taken report indicating immediate compliance to prevent the hosting, generation and sharing of obscene, nude, indecent and explicit content through the misuse of AI-based services.

It cautioned that noncompliance with the requirements would be treated seriously and could lead to strict legal consequences against the social media platform.
