FIA plans India Independence celebration in Illinois

The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Planning Committee held an in-person planning meeting on July 15 at Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant in Carol Stream, Illinois, as organizers prepared for the organization's Aug. 9 celebration marking America's 250th anniversary and India's 80th Independence anniversary.

The meeting was attended by about 100 members, including several FIA Advisory Board members. Organizers discussed plans for the Aug. 9 event, which will take place at the Renaissance Convention Centre in Schaumburg, Illinois.

According to the organizers, the meeting focused on preparations for the celebration, which will feature celebrity guest artists Tirth, Shibani and Razni in a live concert.

The planned event will begin with a business expo at 2 p.m., featuring exhibitors and vendors. Organizers also announced that the program will include panel discussions with invited speakers.

Other scheduled activities include a parade, a flag-hoisting ceremony and patriotic songs commemorating the two national milestones. A cultural program featuring a live musical orchestra and singers from India and the Chicago area is also planned.

In addition, the event will feature food booths and family-oriented entertainment throughout the day.

The celebration is scheduled to conclude with Raas and Garba performances.

The Renaissance Convention Centre, where the event will be held, is among the larger convention venues in the area, according to the organizers.

The July 15 planning meeting brought together FIA committee members and advisers to review logistics and coordinate preparations ahead of the Aug. 9 event. Organizers said the discussions focused on planning the various components of the program and coordinating participation for the celebration.
