Nassau County Police have charged Pakistani origin Asif Qureshi for the alleged murder of his Indian origin estranged wife, Aleena Asif. Qureshi was arraigned in a Long Island courtroom on Oct. 24.
Aleena Asif was found asphyxiated with facial burns at her Larch Drive home in Herricks on Jan. 17, 2025, a week after she served divorce papers to Qureshi. Police say that Qureshi has pleaded not guilty to the charges, as per Long Island News 12.
Aleena Asif was living with her three kids, ages 18, 14 and 7 at the time of the incident. She was being stalked by Qureshi since the divorce papers were served to him.
As per police reports, Qureshi has been arrested once before on account of domestic violence, with five prior incidents being reported, one with his daughter and four with his wife.

The medical examiner determined Aleena Asif's death was "criminal homicide due to asphyxiation by an unknown chemical substance," according to a police news release.
Qureshi, identified by police as an unemployed software engineer, could face life in prison without parole if convicted and is currently being held without bail.
