Canadian Former Liberal MP Raj Grewal is facing multiple civil lawsuits alleging fraud and misuse of client trust funds, while the Law Society of Ontario is seeking an interim suspension of his law licence, according to a report published by the National Post on July 14.
The Law Society alleges it has "reasonable grounds" to believe Grewal poses "a significant risk of harm to members of the public" while it investigates claims that he misappropriated trust funds, participated in fraudulent conduct, and failed to uphold the standards of honesty and integrity expected of lawyers. Davinder Singh Khattra, a lawyer at RSG Law, the Mississauga firm founded by Grewal, is also facing similar proceedings before the Law Society Tribunal. A preliminary hearing in both matters has been scheduled, while Peel Regional Police are also examining some of the allegations, according to court documents cited in the report.

At least 20 civil actions have been filed involving Grewal, RSG Law or related parties. The lawsuits include allegations that mortgages and loans were not repaid, client trust funds were not properly handled, and financial security interests were improperly removed from land title records.
Among the cases, the Bank of Nova Scotia alleges that fraudulent cheques resulted in approximately $3 million being deposited into RSG Law's trust account, prompting a judge to freeze the firm's accounts. In another lawsuit, two brothers from Georgetown, Ontario, allege they entrusted RSG Law with $4.2 million to discharge a mortgage, but claim the mortgage remained outstanding, leaving them responsible for two mortgages simultaneously. Another case involving WIGI Restructured Bond Corp. alleges that a $4-million mortgage was "mistakenly" deleted from land title records during a property transaction, with proceeds allegedly transferred to Grewal's father, Avtar Singh Grewal.

Grewal's lawyers, Simon Bieber and Emma March, expressed that their client denies the allegations. March said several of the lawsuits have already been settled and that Grewal intends to file a statement of defence in the Georgetown case, adding that Khattra handled that particular mortgage transaction.
Grewal represented Brampton East in the House of Commons after being elected as a Liberal MP in the 2015 federal election. A member of Canada's Punjabi-Sikh community, he was among 19 Indian-origin candidates elected to the Canadian Parliament that year. He resigned from the Liberal caucus in 2018 after disclosing significant gambling debts and was acquitted in 2023 of criminal breach-of-trust charges related to those debts.
The Law Society proceedings and the civil lawsuits remain ongoing, and none of the allegations in the civil cases have been proven in court.
