Indian American educator Ashish Vaidya has been elected to the Centennial City Council in Colorado, representing District 2.

He succeeds outgoing Council Member Tammy Maurer following the Nov. 4 municipal election, in which the city also chose a new mayor and three other council members.

Vaidya, a first-generation American, traces his roots to India, where his grandfather, a political leader, was expelled from his party for challenging corruption. His parents emigrated to the United States with eight dollars, determined to build a better life for their children—a story that Vaidya says continues to shape his values of perseverance and public service.

Originally from Philadelphia, Vaidya earned his undergraduate degree cum laude from Villanova University and completed his doctorate in political science from Temple University in 2015. That same year, he and his wife, Heather, moved to Centennial, where they have lived since.

For more than 15 years, Vaidya has taught social sciences at both the high school and college levels. He began teaching at Temple University while still a graduate student and later worked at the university’s Writing Center, mentoring students from diverse and working-class backgrounds.

After relocating to Colorado, he taught political science in Colorado Springs, focusing on civic dialogue and community understanding.

Vaidya has also been involved in international volunteer work, including traveling to Belfast, Northern Ireland, to help rebuild homes destroyed during the Troubles. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he adapted his courses to remote learning while offering emotional support to students coping with isolation.

His election was endorsed by several Colorado leaders, including U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper, Congressman Jason Crow, State Senators Chris Kolker, Iman Jodeh, and Julie Gonzales, and Arapahoe County Commissioners Jessica Campbell, Carrie Warren-Gully, and Leslie Summey. Centennial City Council Members Marlo Alston and Amy Tharp also supported his bid.

The Indian American Impact organization congratulated him on social media, writing, “Congratulations to Ashish Vaidya on his election to the Centennial City Council in Colorado! A collaborative, community-driven leader, Ashish will empower neighbors through integrity and inclusion.”

His election adds to the growing number of Indian Americans holding local office in the United States.
