Amazon has promoted Indian American executive Dharmesh Mehta as technical advisor to CEO Andy Jassy, effective early March 2026.

The appointment places Mehta, who currently serves as vice president of Worldwide Selling Partner Services (SPS), in a high-visibility role commonly described as the CEO’s “shadow,” a position historically used at Amazon to groom senior leaders.

Current CEO Jassy once served in the same capacity under Jeff Bezos. Alex Dunlap, the current technical advisor to Jassy, will move into another leadership role within Amazon.
Mehta has spent more than 12 years at Amazon in leadership roles and has led the Selling Partner Services organization for the past five years. As head of SPS, he oversees tools and services for independent sellers and manages customer trust teams. During this period, independent sellers grew to account for more than 60 percent of units sold on Amazon’s platform.

Announcing the transition on LinkedIn, Mehta said, “After more than 12 years working on our seller team, including five years leading Amazon’s seller business and the Worldwide Selling Partner Services (SPS) organization, I’m excited to take on a new opportunity at Amazon.”

Describing the change, Mehta said he would shift leadership of Worldwide SPS to Amit Agarwal, who will also continue to lead Amazon’s International Emerging Stores businesses. He praised Agarwal’s experience and leadership, saying, “I’m confident that he will be an excellent leader for SPS and our selling partner community.”

Agarwal, senior vice president of international emerging stores, will assume responsibility for Selling Partner Services and Customer Trust teams while continuing his existing role, reporting to Worldwide Amazon Stores CEO Doug Herrington.

Reflecting on his time at SPS, Mehta said, “It has truly been a privilege to lead the talented SPS team and work so closely with our millions of selling partners around the world.” He added that Amazon and independent sellers are “writing the story of the most successful partnership in the history of the retail industry” and said he was excited about the future of that collaboration.

Mehta holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a master’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT. Before joining Amazon, he held senior leadership roles at Microsoft and earlier worked at Bain & Company and as the founder and CEO of ADIS Corporation, an education software firm.
