Bera said AI’s potential in healthcare could lead to advancements in diagnostics, drug discovery, and patient outcomes.

Indian American Congressman Ami Bera (D-CA) said artificial intelligence will play a defining role in shaping local economies and the future of healthcare.

Speaking on the sidelines of NVIDIA’s GTC conference in Washington, D.C., Bera discussed how his California’s Rancho Cordova, is partnering with NVIDIA and the Human Machine Collaboration Institute (HMCI) to build an AI-driven local economy.

“We’re out here with NVIDIA and other groups in Rancho Cordova thinking about what the future looks like. How do we train a workforce for that future?” Bera said. “As Rancho Cordova, Folsom, and Sacramento County grow, how do we actually think about AI in our everyday lives — transportation, how we manage water, how we manage electricity?”

Bera, a physician by training, said AI’s potential in healthcare could lead to advancements in diagnostics, drug discovery, and patient outcomes.

“I always think about how AI is going to make us better clinicians and diagnosticians, use it in drug discovery to come up with better cures and therapies,” he said. “If done right, it’ll improve patient care, improve outcomes, and reduce some of the administrative burden.”

Emphasizing the need for U.S. leadership in emerging technologies, Bera said AI innovation is critical not only for economic growth but also for national security and medical research.

“If we have the lead both from a national security perspective but also from a drug discovery perspective, daily living, we should have the technology that the rest of the world uses,” he said. “The future is bright.”

Bera’s remarks come as Rancho Cordova, part of his congressional district, moves forward with a $5 million plan to develop a regional AI and Robotics Ecosystem in partnership with NVIDIA, HMCI, Solidigm, and other technology firms. The multi-year initiative aims to attract high-tech industries, create skilled jobs, and integrate AI-based systems into city infrastructure.

City officials have said the project will link innovation and education by offering AI-related training opportunities for students and workers. City Manager Micah Runner described the program as “a way to incentivize future growth and future opportunities.” Education leaders said it could enable thousands of local students to gain AI skills and access new technology careers.

The initiative, according to the City of Rancho Cordova, will also explore practical uses of AI to enhance infrastructure management, including traffic systems, water distribution, and energy efficiency.
