The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) has appointed Indian American gastroenterologist Hemant Roy as the next chair of its Department of Internal Medicine, with his term beginning in March 2026.

Roy currently serves as chair of internal medicine at Ben Taub Hospital and associate dean of academic and faculty affairs at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. The move marks his return to Omaha after more than two decades in national academic leadership roles.

At UNMC, Roy will lead the institution’s largest clinical department, which plays a critical role in undergraduate and graduate education as well as research.

“We are excited to have Roy rejoin us at UNMC,” Bradley Britigan, the UNMC College of Medicine dean, said. “We expect that the department of internal medicine will continue to grow and flourish under his leadership.”

He cited Roy’s track record overseeing large, complex academic departments aligned with major hospitals as a key factor in the selection and noted that his long-standing collaborations with members of the National Cancer Institute-designated Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center position him as a strategic partner for future research initiatives.

Roy has launched a high-risk cancer screening program and received the Sir William Osler Internal Medicine Teaching Award and a career development award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

He previously served on the UNMC faculty from 1995 to 2002 while also working at the VA from 2000 to 2002. His career subsequently included senior roles at Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and Boston University Medical Center.

“My time at UNMC was indispensable in a career of excellence in the clinical, research, and teaching facets of academic medicine,” he added. “I am extraordinarily excited about returning to UNMC to give back to the institution that helped launch my academic career.”

Nebraska Medicine CEO Michael Ash added, “Roy’s proven leadership and dedication to education, research, and clinical excellence will guide the department’s continued growth and success. We are delighted to welcome him back to UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.”

Roy’s work as a continuously funded NIH researcher since 2004 has focused on GI cancer risk stratification, including molecular and nano-imaging techniques.

Roy began his academic journey at Vanderbilt University, completing a Bachelor of Science in 1985 and graduating summa cum laude. He pursued advanced medical training at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, earning his MD with distinction in 1989.

Subsequently, he finished his internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and undertook a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Chicago between 1992 and 1995.
