Shekar Krishnan re-elected to New York City Council

Initially elected in 2021, Krishnan is the first Indian-American ever elected to the City Council in NYC history.

Indian American Shekar Krishnan has been re-elected to the New York City Council, representing District 25, which includes Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, and Woodside in Queens.

Krishnan, a Democrat, secured 21,082 votes and defeated Republican candidate Ramses S. Frias by a margin of nearly 50 percent. He will continue representing three of the most diverse immigrant communities in the world.



Initially elected in 2021, Krishnan made history as the first Indian American ever elected to the New York City Council. Before entering public office, he was a longtime community activist in Jackson Heights and Elmhurst and worked as a civil rights lawyer focused on combating housing discrimination.

He co-founded 'Communities Resist', a nonprofit known for its community-driven, intersectional work on housing and racial justice in North Brooklyn and Queens.

The son of immigrant parents from Kerala, India, Krishnan has been active in city politics for years. He lives in Queens with his wife, an immigration public defender and reproductive justice advocate, and their two children.
