Nevada state and cities proclaim October as Hindu Heritage month

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has officially proclaimed October 2025 as Hindu Heritage Month in recognition of the cultural, spiritual, and community contributions of Hindu Americans across the state.

The proclamation, issued by the State of Nevada on Sept. 17, acknowledges that Hindu Americans “have made profound contributions to philosophy, science, mathematics, art, music, and spirituality,” and that their traditions of “family, faith, service, and community engagement” continue to enrich Nevada.

It also highlights that Hinduism “demonstrates through a living enlightened civilization that global peace is achievable and sustainable,” beginning with “individual peace and spiritual awakening.”

The statewide announcement was marked by a gathering at the Nevada Governor’s Office of New Americans (ONA), where members of the local Hindu community received the proclamation.

Among those present were ONA Director Iris Jones, CoHNA Board Member Sudha Jagannathan, representatives from the Nepali Hindu community and the Hindu Education Foundation, as well as leaders from temples founded by the Indian and Fijian diaspora. The event featured the lighting of diyas and sharing of Diwali sweets, symbolizing unity in diversity.

Adding to the statewide recognition, both the City of Las Vegas and the City of Henderson issued proclamations marking October as Hindu Heritage Month. Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley urged residents to join in honoring “the more than one billion Hindus worldwide and the millions of Hindu Americans,” highlighting the community’s role in enriching the city’s “shared civic and cultural life.”

Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero underscored the city’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, emphasizing that recognizing Hindu Heritage Month helps “better understand, recognize, and celebrate the rich history and shared experiences of Hindu Americans.”

The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), which coordinated the celebration, thanked Nevada leaders “for recognizing the culture, history and contributions of American Hindus in Nevada and the US as a whole.”

Nevada’s proclamations align with a nationwide movement recognizing October as Hindu Heritage Month — an initiative first launched in 2021 to celebrate Hindu philosophy, art, and culture across the United States.

Over the past three years, several states including Ohio, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and North Carolina have issued similar proclamations, with Ohio becoming one of the first to pass a formal legislative resolution in 2024 declaring October as Hindu Heritage Month.

Nationally, the observance has received support from lawmakers and community leaders who see it as a step toward fostering awareness and appreciation of Hinduism’s contributions to American society.
