Kirkland proclaims South Asian Heritage Month, honors Indian Consulate

Proclamation recognizes diaspora contributions and promotes cultural understanding across the community.

The City of Kirkland has proclaimed July 2026 as South Asian Heritage Month, recognizing the contributions of South Asian Americans and commending the Consulate General of India in Seattle for its role in strengthening ties between the Indian diaspora and the local community, according to the text of the proclamation and a post on X by the India in Seattle account.

The proclamation, issued by Mayor Kelli Curtis on behalf of the Kirkland City Council, celebrates the histories, cultures, languages and traditions of South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and the Maldives.

According to the proclamation, South Asian Americans have made significant contributions to the social, economic, educational, artistic and civic life of both the United States and the City of Kirkland. It also recognizes the community's observance of cultural and religious festivals, including Diwali, Eid, Vaisakhi, Holi and Navratri.

Further, it specifically acknowledges the Consulate General of India in Seattle, established in 2023, for what it describes as its role in bringing together the Indian diaspora while fostering people-to-people ties between India and the United States.

According to the document, the consulate has engaged with the City of Kirkland while promoting partnerships in trade, technology, higher education and cultural exchange. It also credits the mission with strengthening cultural connections through celebrations and community initiatives highlighting South Asian heritage.

Moreover it states that the city recognizes the importance of honoring the histories and lived experiences of South Asian residents while acknowledging ongoing conversations surrounding representation, identity and inclusion. It says the designation reflects Kirkland's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

In a post on X, the Consulate General of India in Seattle thanked Curtis for issuing the proclamation and the Kirkland City Council for inviting representatives of the consulate to receive it on behalf of the South Asian community.

The consulate described the recognition as "a most befitting acknowledgement of the wonderful contributions of the Indian American community in Kirkland."

According to the post, the proclamation was presented on July 7, 2026, in Kirkland. The consulate also tagged the Embassy of India in Washington, the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian Ambassador to the United States Vinay Mohan Kwatra.

The proclamation formally designating July 2026 as South Asian Heritage Month in Kirkland and encouraging residents to learn about, engage with and celebrate the cultural heritage, traditions and contributions of South Asian communities as part of the city's broader commitment to diversity.

The document was signed by Curtis on behalf of the Kirkland City Council and issued under the city's official seal.

South Asian Heritage Month is observed annually from July 1 to July 31 in several countries, including the United Kingdom and communities across North America, to recognize the heritage and contributions of people with roots in South Asia. In recent years, municipalities and public institutions across the United States have increasingly marked the observance through proclamations, cultural events and community partnerships aimed at celebrating the region's diverse traditions and the contributions of South Asian diaspora communities to civic life.
