American progressive political action committee and caucus Justice Democrats has endorsed San Francisco congressional candidate Saikat Chakrabarti in California’s 11th Congressional District race.

In a post on X announcing the endorsement, Justice Democrats said, “Poetic justice is taking a seat controlled by Dem leadership for 40 years & electing one of the leaders of our progressive primary movement. The movements San Francisco has built deserve a megaphone in Congress.”

Chakrabarti described the endorsement as a “homecoming,” reflecting his role as one of Justice Democrats’ co-founders.

“Proud to be a part of the @justicedems slate in 2026. Feels like a homecoming,” he wrote on X. “I'm so excited to go to Congress with this team to completely change the direction and leadership of the Democratic Party. This is our New Deal moment.”

Chakrabarti is running for the San Francisco-based seat long held by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He was previously endorsed by former New York Congressman Jamaal Bowman, further cementing his standing within the party’s progressive wing as the race to succeed Pelosi draws national attention.

The contest has emerged as one of the most closely watched Democratic primaries of the 2026 cycle, with multiple Democrats competing for the seat.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, to Indian immigrant parents, Chakrabarti moved to San Francisco in 2009. He previously worked as an early engineer at Stripe, served as technology director on Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, managed Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s 2018 campaign, and later served as her chief of staff, where he helped launch the Green New Deal.

California’s primary election is scheduled for June 2. Under the state’s top-two primary system, the two candidates receiving the most votes will advance to the general election on Nov. 3.
