According to local media reports, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has identified the victim as 25-year-old Gurkirat Singh Manocha. The authorities have described the incident as an “altercation" involving several people.

Manocha had moved to Canada about 15 months earlier to pursue a postgraduate diploma in business management at Northern Lights College in Fort St. John. He worked part-time at a Walmart store.

His family in Madhya Pradesh alleges the death resulted from a brutal assault. They claim a group of 10 to 12 youths, possibly fellow students, beat him severely after a dispute and then ran him over with a vehicle following his part-time shift.

Northern Lights College expressed awareness of the tragic incident and is prioritizing support for its community while cooperating with RCMP.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav assured the family of assistance from the Indian government to facilitate the repatriation and last rites. B.C.'s Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Nina Krieger described the death as “a tragic situation.”
