An Indiana State Police trooper stopped a blue International semi tractor-trailer on Interstate 70 in Putnam County for a routine Department of Transportation inspection at about 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 3. The vehicle was traveling toward Richmond from Joplin, Missouri.

After observing indicators of possible criminal activity, the trooper requested an Indiana State Police K-9 unit to conduct a search of the semi tractor-trailer. The search led to the discovery of the drugs in the sleeper area of the vehicle.

Following the discovery, Gurpreet Singh, 25, and Jasveer Singh, 30, both residents of California, were arrested and transported to the Putnam County Jail.

They have been preliminarily charged with dealing narcotics, a Level 2 felony.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations have placed deportation holds on both men due to prior pending removal proceedings.

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun addressed the incident in a post on X, writing, “ZERO TOLERANCE. Indiana State Police stopped 309 pounds of cocaine worth $7 MILLION on I-70 over the weekend. Drug traffickers are not welcome in Indiana. We’re backing law enforcement, cracking down hard, and keeping Hoosier communities safe.”

Indiana State Police said the seizure is part of its ongoing interdiction efforts to prevent illegal drugs from being transported through the state.
