Hundreds gather at Michigan State Capitol for Diwali celebrations

The celebration featured a Senate proclamation and a unity luncheon.

A special Diwali celebration was organized at the Michigan State Capitol on Oct. 21. The celebration witnessed attendance from over 500 community members, faith leaders, and elected officials, all gathered to celebrate the Festival of Light.

The celebration was a joint effort by Senators Jim Runstead and Michael Webber, along with community leader Sunny Reddy. The event also received support from BAPS Public Affairs, Swaminarayan temples across Michigan, Hema Rachmale, Piyush and his team, and Amber.

The event also featured a Diwali Proclamation presented on the Michigan Senate floor, recognizing the festival’s message of light triumphing over darkness and the shared values of knowledge, peace, and hope.

Reddy highlighted the importance of the celebration and said, “This celebration reflects the growing spirit of inclusion and cultural pride in our state.”

He added, “I’m deeply grateful to everyone who contributed — especially Senators Runstead and Webber, BAPS Public Affairs, Hema Rachmale, Piyush and his team, and Amber — for making this Diwali at the Capitol truly special.”

The celebration ended with a Diwali luncheon at the Capitol, uniting Michigan leaders in tribute to the festival’s themes of light, unity, and service.

“Diwali is more than a festival — it’s a reminder that light always prevails over darkness,” Reddy added.

He further said, “I’m thankful for the opportunity to celebrate it alongside our Michigan community and leaders who share this spirit of hope and togetherness.”

Diwali celebrations were also held at BAPS temples in Sterling Heights and Canton, drawing hundreds of devotees to the celebration of devotion, culture, and joy.
