GOPIO Women’s Council hosts talk on domestic violence

Plans were made to create a fund to support women’s causes and the need for a global network of women’s representatives.

A discussion on domestic violence prevention and intervention for the South Asian community in the United States was organized by the Women’s Council Wing of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) on Feb. 23.

Titled “Understanding Action Against Domestic Violence,” the webinar brought together speakers and participants from the United States, Canada, India, Australia and New Zealand and was spearheaded by GOPIO Women’s Council Chair Charu Shivakumar.

In her address, Shivakumar emphasized the need to raise awareness and provide solutions for domestic violence. GOPIO’s Global Ambassador Nami Kaur discussed her personal commitment to women’s rights and the importance of extending educational efforts globally.

Numerous attendees shared their experiences in tackling instances of domestic violence within the South Asian community, especially the Indian community. Notable speakers included Zoya Salim Kara, the team leader for ethnic services at Sahaayta in Auckland, New Zealand; GOPIO Women’s Council Co-Chair Kritilata Ram from Mauritius; GOPIO Health Council Co-Chair Aparna Hande; and GOPIO Women’s Council Co-Chair Jayashri Chintalapudi, among others.

The webinar aimed to educate and inspire action against domestic violence, with a panel of experts providing insights and recommendations.

GOPIO Life Member Suman Kapoor from New Zealand highlighted the need for education and empowerment to tackle such situations, while Charu Shivakumar and others emphasized the importance of maintaining trust and connection with victims.

The group also discussed creating a fund under the GOPIO Foundation to support women’s causes and the need for a global network of women’s representatives.

GOPIO also announced a Women’s Conference webinar titled “Diaspora Women Scaling Educational, Political, Social and Corporate World” on March 14 as part of its International Women’s Day celebrations.
