Indian-Australian researcher Dr. Ekta Sharma has won the National Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Award and Medal for Research Excellence 2025, a highly competitive national honor recognizing outstanding early-career research, Australian officials said Dec. 23.
The award was presented by Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles at a ceremony attended by senior officials, including Nina Davidson, deputy director-general (intelligence) at the Office of National Intelligence.
Awarded annually, the honor recognizes one early-career researcher whose work demonstrates depth, rigor and impact in addressing national strategic challenges. Sharma’s research focuses on artificial intelligence and contributes to unclassified projects aligned with the priorities of Australia’s National Intelligence Community.
In accepting the award, Sharma said the recognition reflected not only her research outcomes but also a broader commitment to women returning to the workforce after career breaks. She said the journey underscored the importance of confidence and resilience in navigating professional and personal challenges.
The National Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Program supports Australian citizens working across science, social science and technology, with an emphasis on research advancing emerging fields of national importance.
Separately, Sharma has previously been awarded an Australian government fellowship for work on next-generation AI space satellite challenges. Her research has included designing efficient AI models and code for satellite and radio communications for the Australian Department of Defence.
Sharma is based in Queensland and is affiliated with the University of Southern Queensland. She has held research and scientific roles in Australia and Europe and has received multiple competitive grants and fellowships for her work in mathematics and artificial intelligence.
