The bill, sponsored by Senator Michael O. Moore, seeks to amend Chapter 6 of the Massachusetts General Laws to officially recognize Diwali Day in the Commonwealth.
“I’m so thrilled to share that my bill designating Diwali Day as a state holiday has been advanced out of committee,” Senator Moore said in a post on X.
If enacted, Massachusetts would join a growing number of U.S. states recognizing Diwali as a public holiday. The move reflects efforts to celebrate the state’s cultural diversity and the contributions of its South Asian population.
The bill was originally introduced on Feb. 27, and was referred to the Senate Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight. A hearing was held on May 13 before the committee’s favorable report this week.
The legislation remains pending before the Senate Rules Committee as the next step in the legislative process.
