Global Organization of People of Indian Origin – Connecticut Chapter (GOPIO-CT) donated $25,000 for the construction of toilets for girls at municipal schools in Maharashtra. The check was presented to the Society for Human and Environment Development (SHED) on May 31, during a seminar on ‘Promoting Girls Education, Hygiene, Health & Nutrition and Women Empowerment in Rural Maharashtra’.
The $25,000 donation from GOPIO-CT would be used for the construction of toilets in 10 municipal schools in Maharashtra.
GOPIO-CT and SHED also collaborate in running schools in Mumbai’s Dharavi slums and tribal areas as well as in providing health services in the rural areas.
The event, moderated by GOPIO Life Member Biru Sharma, was attended by SHED Vice President and Trustee Asad Latif and Executive Council Member Prakash Kundalia along with GOPIO International Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham and Secretary Siddharth Jain, GOPIO-CT Vice President Nandu Kuppuswamy, Board Member Meera Banta, and Past Presidents Shailesh Naik and Ashok Nichani.
Latif underscored the impact that SHED has created and said, “Over the past five decades, SHED’s vocational training initiatives have empowered 1.5 million women to become self-reliant and support their families.” Kundalia added that SHED has constructed 42,000 toilets till date to improve sanitation and reduce school dropout rates among adolescent girls.
