A GoFundMe fundraiser, organized following the death of an Indian-origin couple in a fatal road crash in the U.S., on Jan. 5, has surpassed its initial goal of $350,000 and raised $580,301 so far. Authorities have also arrested a suspect, identified as Michael Coupet.

The deceased NRI couple was identified as Kotikalapudi Krishna Kishore, 45, and his wife Asha Kanna, 40.

At the time of the crash, Asha Khanna was driving the Chrysler Pacifica and was pronounced dead at the scene after the suspect’s vehicle allegedly collided head-on with the Telugu family’s car. Her husband, Kishore, was rushed to a local hospital, where he was subsequently declared dead.

The couple’s children, 21-year-old daughter Shivani and their 16-year-old son Suchay, survived the crash but sustained critical injuries.

The GoFundMe has been set up to support the couple's children and their upcoming financial challenges.

After the initial target was reached in just 24 hours, despite its objective of gathering the amount in 30 days, the fundraiser's target was raised to $450,000 for a 30-day period, but with support from the community, it has already collected donations totaling $580,301 and continues to grow.

Maryland State Police arrested Coupet, 34, of Baltimore City, and charged him with four counts of vehicular manslaughter, four counts of homicide by motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and impaired by alcohol, life-threatening injury by motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, life-threatening injury by motor vehicle while impaired, life-threatening injury involving a motor vehicle, driving under the influence, and driving while impaired.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Coupet, who was the driver of a Toyota Sequoia involved in the crash, was traveling the wrong way on I-95 when he struck the Chrysler head-on.

Following his arrest, Coupet was transported to the Howard County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.
