Virginia Tech has launched a technology research center in India in collaboration with Hyderabad -based Mahindra University.
The Interdisciplinary Advanced Research Center for Transformative Technologies, located in the Mahindra University campus , will serve as a hub for cutting-edge research in science and technology.

The initiative aims to bring together faculty and researchers from both institutions to address critical global challenges. The center will focus on four key areas: biomarker discovery for early disease detection and biotherapeutics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, smart and connected cities, and the water and energy nexus.
Research in these areas will be supported by platform technologies including advanced characterization, instrumentation, computation, and materials science.
"This partnership with Virginia Tech reflects our commitment to fostering interdisciplinary research and preparing the next generation of ethical and innovative leaders,” said Yajulu Medury, vice chancellor of Mahindra University.
Highlighting the global importance of the new center, Roop Mahajan, Lewis Hester Chair in Mechanical Engineering and Director of Strategic Research and Innovation at Virginia Tech India, said, “Transformative research is about addressing society’s most urgent challenges with innovative, meaningful solutions. This partnership equips future leaders with the skills and vision needed to create a positive impact on humanity.”
The launch was marked by a signing ceremony attended by senior officials from both universities, including Guru Ghosh, vice president for Outreach and International Affairs at Virginia Tech; Priya Goutham, director of operations, Virginia Tech India; and faculty and research leads from Mahindra University.
“This collaboration epitomizes the spirit of global academic partnerships,” said Ghosh. “By leveraging the strengths of Virginia Tech, Virginia Tech India, and Mahindra University, we are creating an environment that fosters innovation, cultural exchange, and impactful research that transcends borders.”
The two universities will also explore cultural exchange programs and the development of additional joint and dual-degree graduate offerings, expanding academic ties between the U.S. and India.
Virginia Tech India, a division of the university’s Outreach and International Affairs office, has been central to previous international partnerships, including the Thapar-Virginia Tech Center of Excellence in Emerging Materials (established in 2019) and a dual-degree master’s program with NMIMS University in Mumbai launched in 2023.
