Indian-origin professor V.S. Subrahmanian has been named co-director of the newly launched Northwestern Network for Collaborative Intelligence (NNCI), a university-wide initiative aimed at advancing the use of data science and artificial intelligence across research and education at Northwestern University.
Subrahmanian, the Walter P. Murphy professor of computer science at Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering, will lead the initiative alongside professor Abel Kho from the Feinberg School of Medicine. The announcement follows a year of planning by the university’s data science and artificial intelligence steering committee.
“The Northwestern Network for Collaborative Intelligence is a unique model that recognizes the immense potential of data science and AI to transform nearly all aspects of higher education,” provost Kathleen Hagerty said in a statement to Northwestern University.
The NNCI is housed within the office of the provost and will function as a central hub, linking schools, research centers, and institutes across campus. It is designed to be adaptive, with the ability to connect to emerging initiatives and encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration, including partnerships with businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits.
According to Northwestern University, one of NNCI’s goals is to make AI tools more accessible to faculty and students while also supporting the development of baseline education in data science and AI for all students.
“Data science and AI are reshaping every aspect of society,” Kho said. “Our goal is to foster an environment where all faculty and students feel confident using AI technologies to make advancements in their respective fields.”
Subrahmanian, who is also a faculty fellow in the Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs and founding director of the Northwestern Security and AI Lab, emphasized the initiative’s potential reach.
“With this effort, we believe there’s an opportunity to establish the University as a world leader in data science and AI across many disciplines,” Subrahmanian said. “I look forward to connecting with key leaders throughout the Northwestern community to help shape this exciting, cross-disciplinary initiative.”
The NNCI will sponsor events beginning this summer and into the fall to explore the impact of AI and provide experiential learning opportunities for students.
