U.S. hits Brazil With 50% tariff over censorship, human rights concerns

Trump’s executive order also follows mounting concerns among U.S. businesses operating in Brazil, especially tech and media firms.

In a dramatic escalation of tensions between the United States and Brazil, President Donald Trump on July 30 signed an executive order imposing a total of 50 percent tariff on Brazilian imports, declaring a national emergency under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

The move, which adds a 40 percent hike on top of an existing 10 percent tariff, comes in response to what the White House calls “unusual and extraordinary threats” posed by the Brazilian government to U.S. national security, foreign policy, and economy.
