US court dismisses HAF’s lawsuit over caste allegations in California

The court noted that HAF’s concerns—though framed as constitutional violations—were not supported by evidence of direct legal harm.

A district court has dismissed the Hindu American Foundation’s (HAF) lawsuit against California’s Civil Rights Department, ruling that the plaintiffs lacked standing and failed to show a direct injury. The lawsuit, filed in 2024, accused the department of promoting caste discrimination claims based on “false and harmful stereotypes” targeting Hindus and South Asians.

In a 22-page ruling issued July 18, U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria granted the state’s motion to dismiss, writing: “The plaintiffs do not demonstrate a concrete and particularized injury. Nor do they show that any such injury is fairly traceable to the Department’s actions.”
