The University of York is set to open a new campus in Mumbai, marking its first international expansion and placing the British institution among a growing list of global universities establishing a direct presence in India.
The announcement released as a statement on May.2 follows a series of events in Mumbai, where the university signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the state of Maharashtra. The agreement was formalized in the presence of Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The next step is regulatory approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to officially establish the institution.
The new campus, slated to welcome its first cohort in the 2026–27 academic year, will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in computer science with AI and cyber security, business, economics, and creative industries. The courses will follow the same curriculum and academic standards as the UK-based campus, and graduates will receive University of York degrees.
Vice-chancellor professor Charlie Jeffery, who also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit, said the India initiative aligns with the university’s mission. “The quality of what we do here in York, and our purposes as a university for public good, will be critical to the future success of this venture in India. We’re taking our values-driven approach to education and research, working with a country that has an ambitious drive for global influence, skills development and economic growth,” he said.
“This is a really exciting venture and we are committed to building and strengthening our connections in India and contributing to the education of its future leaders and entrepreneurs,” Jeffery added.
Initially operating from an existing building in a Mumbai business district, the campus will eventually expand into a full-fledged university complex. It will be staffed independently, but overseen by York’s curriculum and quality assurance framework.
Chief Minister Fadnavis called the partnership a valuable addition to India’s higher education landscape. “It is a privilege to welcome the University of York to Mumbai as we expand world-class educational opportunities in India,” he said. “Built on a strong foundation of shared innovation and aligned priorities, we remain dedicated to advancing a relationship that reinforces national development objectives and enriches the global exchange of knowledge.”
Alison Barrett, country director at the British Council India, welcomed the development. “It is exciting to hear that the University of York is planning to open an international campus in Mumbai, India. The strong emphasis on research and innovation alongside high-quality teaching and learning will catalyse research partnerships between innovators from India and the UK,” she said.
Founded in 1963, the University of York is part of the UK's prestigious Russell Group. It is one of only four UK institutions to rank in the country’s top ten for both teaching and research quality. Its decision to establish a campus in India comes amid a broader push by Indian authorities to internationalize higher education under the National Education Policy.
