Trump’s tariffs backfire, fuel BRICS unity

Trump’s aggressive tariffs backfired, strengthening BRICS unity and prompting coordinated moves to counter U.S. dominance in global trade.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on BRICS nations were meant to divide the bloc and assert American trade dominance. Instead, they’ve triggered the opposite: deeper political and economic coordination among Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

What began as a unilateral pressure campaign — slapping 50 percent tariffs on Indian and Brazilian goods, 30 percent on South African minerals, and threatening more on Chinese exports — is fast becoming a case study in strategic miscalculation. Far from isolating individual members, Trump’s offensive is forging renewed BRICS solidarity at a moment of global power flux.
