Indian-origin neurologist helped develop FDA-approved Alzheimer’s blood test

Johns Hopkins researchers say new test will expand early detection and treatment options for the disease.

Indian-origin neurologist Abhay Moghekar, a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, has played a key role in developing the first FDA-approved blood test for Alzheimer’s disease. Johns Hopkins said the test, cleared by the Food and Drug Administration in May, could make early detection more accessible by replacing costly and less widely available procedures such as PET scans.

“This blood test should be a game-changer,” Moghekar told Johns Hopkins. His research on identifying biomarkers of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s, contributed to the development of the test.
