US President Donald Trump announced on May 19 that Russia and Ukraine will begin immediate negotiations toward a ceasefire and a potential end to the ongoing war, following separate phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a ceasefire and, more importantly, an end to the war,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. “The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as only they know the details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of.”
