Congress Member of Indian Parliament Shashi Tharoor, and his parliamentary delegation paid their respects at the National September 11 Memorial in New York, to impress upon the American people that terrorism is their “shared problem” and that they must “fight it unitedly”.

Tharoor’s delegation landed in the US on Saturday and will also visit Guyana, Panama, Brazil, and Colombia to take India’s message about what prompted the country to launch Operation Sindoor – to send a message to Pakistan that sheltering and giving patronage to terrorist groups that attack India will no longer be tolerated and the operation showed India’s determination to wipe out terror hangouts in the neighbouring country.

The delegation comprises of Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), G M Harish Balayagi (Telugu Desam Party), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Tejaswi Surya, Bhubaneswar K Lata (all BJP), Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena) and ex-Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu.

Tharoor described the visit to the memorial as a "very moving moment". He elaborated: “It was obviously a very moving moment for us, but it was also meant to send a very strong message that we are here in a city which is bearing still the scars of that savage terrorist attack in the wake of yet another terrorist attack in our own country... unlike the US I am afraid we have had to endure a very much larger number of terrorist attacks in India."

He had a message for the American people: “We came both as a reminder that this is a shared problem, but also out of a spirit of solidarity with the victims, who included Indians...it is a global problem, it's a scourge, we must fight it unitedly."

Later, he briefed an audience at the Indian Consulate in New York about the attack in Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor, explaining Pakistan’s role in encouraging terror activities in India.

He said: "Perpetrators of terror should indeed be brought to justice, and we are not going to stop our hunt for those who did this latest atrocity".

Explaining his role in taking up the responsibility of spreading India’s message as head of the delegation, Tharoor told the audience: "I don't work for the government, as you know. I work for an opposition party, but I myself authored an op-ed in one of India's leading papers, within a couple of days, saying that the time had come to hit hard and hit smart, and I'm pleased to say that's exactly what India did.”

He said if those behind Pahalgam attack thought it would divide the Indian people, the opposite happened: "There was an extraordinary amount of togetherness cutting across religious and other divides that people have tried to provoke. The message is very clear that there was a malign intent... India, sadly, had no reason to doubt where it came from.”
