South Asian appointed to Virginia Governor's council on women

Nuzaira Azam, a South Asian journalist and community advocate, has been appointed to the Virginia Council on Women by Governor Glenn Youngkin.
Azam was sworn in on Aug. 26 at the Virginia State Capitol by the Secretary of the Commonwealth Kelly Gee.
The Virginia Council on Women is a key advisory body to the governor on policies affecting women. It is charged with promoting educational, professional, cultural, and civic opportunities for women of all age groups.

With decades of experience in journalism and civic leadership, Azam, a resident of Herndon, Virginia, also serves as the founder-president of The Global Beat Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to fostering dialogue, leadership, and community engagement.
The Foundation offers seminars, workshops, and youth forums that address contemporary issues, with a particular focus on empowering women and developing leadership. It also trains journalists, with a special focus on supporting women journalists.
Azam's appointment reflects her enduring dedication to elevating underserved voices and advancing gender equality in public discourse.
Reacting to the appointment, Azam said, “It is an honor to serve on the Virginia Council on Women.”
She added, “I look forward to contributing to efforts that uplift women and youth across our state.”
