State Senator Ghazala Hashmi is leading her Republican challenger, John Reid, by 10 percentage points in the 2025 lieutenant governor race according to a new poll released this week.
The survey, sponsored by Virginia Commonwealth University, shows Hashmi with the support of 46 percent of likely voters, compared to 36 percent backing Reid, a conservative radio host and self-identified "MAGA Republican." The poll was conducted between June 19 and July 3, among a sample of 809 adult residents across Virginia.

Hashmi, who flipped a Republican-held Senate seat in 2019 to become the first Muslim woman elected to Virginia’s state legislature, is seeking re-election in a climate where Democrats are fighting to maintain their hold on the Virginia Senate amid growing GOP efforts to reclaim control.
Reid, a former talk show host on Richmond’s WRVA radio, has gained popularity for his alignment with far-right conservative platforms and endorsement of Trump-era policies. His campaign has centered on “restoring parental rights” in schools, opposing abortion access, and eliminating what he has called “leftist indoctrination” in public institutions.
In contrast, Hashmi has campaigned on protecting abortion rights, increasing education funding, and safeguarding democracy at the state level. Her lead suggests continued momentum among suburban voters who helped Democrats retake key seats in past election cycles.
While the 10-point margin offers Democrats encouragement, political analysts caution that voter turnout, redistricting impacts, and campaign funding disparities could still influence the race in the months ahead.
The Virginia legislative elections are set for November 2025.
