Indian American Congressman Ami Bera (CA-06) has called for urgent international intervention to prevent further loss of civilian lives as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens.

In a statement released on July 25, Bera described the scale of suffering as “unacceptable and [in need of] urgent action,” urging both Israel and the United States to ensure the safe and sustained delivery of aid to Palestinian civilians.

“The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire,” Bera said. “There is widespread starvation, and the crisis is worsening with each passing day. This level of human suffering is unacceptable and demands urgent action.”

He called on the Israeli government to accelerate the delivery of essential supplies such as food, water, and medicine, while emphasizing the need for greater international coordination. “The United States must continue working with Israel, Egypt, Qatar, and the broader international community to dramatically scale up humanitarian aid and ensure it reaches those most in need,” he added.

Bera also pointed to Hamas’s role in prolonging the conflict. “Hamas must end this war, release all hostages, and accept a ceasefire agreement. Its continued refusal to negotiate in good faith is inflicting immense harm on the Palestinian people,” he said.

He criticized both the Israeli and U.S. responses, urging stronger leadership to protect civilians. “The Israeli government has not done enough to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, and the United States must do more to lead a coordinated international response,” he said.

Bera warned that continued inaction would have far-reaching consequences. “Failure to meet this moment will not only deepen the suffering of the Palestinian people but also further erode Israel’s international standing and long-term security,” he said. “The choices made now will shape the prospects for peace and stability in the region for years to come.”

In December 2023, he introduced a House resolution calling for the urgent delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza. In May, he led a congressional letter to the Trump administration urging the resumption and expansion of aid as conditions on the ground worsened.

Since the conflict began, the humanitarian situation in Gaza has spiraled into catastrophe. According to Gaza’s health authorities, at least 122 people — including 83 children — have died from starvation-related causes.

Organizations such as Médecins Sans Frontières have reported a sharp rise in severe acute malnutrition among children, with cases tripling in a matter of weeks. Clinics are overwhelmed, and there are critical shortages of therapeutic food and medical supplies. UNICEF and the World Health Organization warn that stocks of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), essential for treating malnourished children, could be depleted by mid-August.
