Congressman Ami Bera issued a statement condemning the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol raids in Sacramento on July 17.
ICE and Border Patrol had arrested 11 individuals suspected of being illegal immigrants.
Five of those detained had criminal histories, including three convicted felons with drug-related offenses and one, Carlos Mata, with convictions for crimes such as battery, possession of a controlled substance, and first-degree burglary.

While immigration rights advocacy groups decry the move and claim that a US citizen was among the 11 arrested, Rep. Bera has labeled the arrests as "racially driven and conducted without probable cause."
Rep. Bera added that the arrests raise "serious concerns about unlawful and discriminatory enforcement."
He said, “There is a clear difference between targeting individuals who pose a serious threat to public safety and targeting people of color in a Home Depot parking lot who are simply trying to work hard and support their families.
In an interview with the Fox News, the El Centro sector’s chief patrol agent, Gregory Bovino, said “There is no sanctuary city. Sacramento is not a sanctuary city. The state of California is not a sanctuary state. There is no sanctuary anywhere.”
He added, “We’re here to stay. We’re not going anywhere. We’re going to affect this mission and secure the homeland.”
Rep. Bera ended his statement by calling out ICE and Border Patrol's questionable moves and said, “This type of action undermines civil liberties and erodes public trust in law enforcement.”
