NYIFF 2025: Angammal bags Best Film

The Tamil movie explores tradition, identity, and familial tension.

The New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) was presented by the Indo-American Arts Council / X/ nyindianff

The New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) concluded on June 22 with an award ceremony during which Angammal, directed by Vipin Radhakrishnan, took home the Best Film award.

Set in a Tamil Nadu village, Angammal follows a man grappling with discomfort over his mother’s traditional, blouse-less attire—a conflict that intensifies ahead of a visit from his in-laws.

The movie, running nearly 2 hours, was produced by Anjoy Samuel, Feroz Rahim, with lead roles taken by Vinod Anand, Sudhahar Das and Geetha Kailasam. Adapted from Tamil writer Perumal Murugan’s short story Kodithuni, the movie was also one of the standout films at the 29th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), 2024. 

Other honorees include Aranya Sahay’s Humans in the Loop, which won Best Debut Film, in collaboration with the Film Critics Circle of India. Rima Das was awarded Best Director for Village Rockstars 2, and also jointly received the New York Women in Film & Television Excellence in Directing Award with Shonali Bose, recognised for A Fly on the Wall.

Subhadra Mahaja earned Best Screenplay for Second Chance, while Nawazuddin Siddiqui won Best Actor for I’m Not An Actor. Sharmila Tagore took home Best Actress for her performance in The Ancient.

The Best Feature Documentary award went to A Fly on the Wall, co-directed by Shonali Bose and Nilesh Maniyar. An Arrested Moment, directed by Dev Benega, won Best Short Documentary, and Thursday Special by Varun Tandon received Best Short Narrative.
