Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is set to offer a first-of-its-kind academic course in Canada dedicated to Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh. The announcement came on June 22 during the Billboard Summit at NXNE in Toronto, a gathering of music and media industry leaders.

Scheduled to launch in Fall 2026, the course will be introduced through The Creative School at TMU and will examine Dosanjh’s influence across music, film, and diasporic communities, analyzing how his body of work contributes to global pop culture and creative economies rooted in regional authenticity.

According to Billboard Canada, which first published the news, TMU faculty highlighted Dosanjh’s career as a case study in global music entrepreneurship, citing his rise as an artist who bridges identity, culture, and commercial success. The publication, which released a special print edition in 2023 focusing exclusively on Dosanjh, is supporting the course.

TMU and Billboard Canada have described the initiative as a significant academic recognition of the broader cultural movement that Punjabi music now represents.

Dosanjh’s 2023 Dil-Luminati tour broke attendance records for Punjabi concerts in Canada, including performances at venues like Rogers Centre in Toronto and BC Place in Vancouver. His growing footprint in North America has been seen as a sign of Punjabi music’s increasing mainstream relevance.

The announcement arrives at a time of increased global visibility—and scrutiny—for Dosanjh. His upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3 has recently drawn criticism online in India, with calls for a boycott, although the artist continues to receive strong international support.
