Indian American leaders from New York City expressed grief and outrage over the July 28 shooting in Midtown Manhattan that left four people dead, including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam.
“I’m heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in Midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts. Grateful for all of our first responders on the ground,” Zohran Mamdani, Assemblymember and Democratic nominee for Mayor of New York City, wrote on X shortly after the incident.

He later paid tribute to Officer Islam, who, he said, joined the police force with the intention of building a legacy his family could take pride in. “He has done that, and more. I pray for him, his family, and honor the legacy of service and sacrifice he leaves behind,” Mamdani added.
Sharing details of Islam’s life and service, Mamdani said, “A Bangladeshi immigrant who joined the NYPD four years ago, he lived in Parkchester with his pregnant wife, their two young children, and his elderly parents.”
“A hero lost,” New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar wrote on X. “Officer Didarul Islam stood for courage, duty, and love of community. We must always honor his sacrifice. My heart is with his family and all who served beside him.”

The shooting occurred at 345 Park Avenue, home to the NFL headquarters and several financial firms. According to officials, the gunman, 27-year-old Shane Tamura — who had a documented history of mental illness — entered the building armed with an assault-style rifle and began firing indiscriminately. Officer Islam, 36, was on a commercial security detail when he was fatally shot.
Islam is survived by his pregnant wife, two young children, and elderly parents. “Pure evil came to the heart of our city,” said Police Benevolent Association president Patrick Hendry.
The FBI is assisting the NYPD in the ongoing investigation.
