GHISS celebrates 28th annual Sikh Youth Camp in Maryland

The event focused on deepening the participants' understanding of Sikh values and cultural heritage.

The Guru Harkrishan Institute of Sikh Studies (GHISS) organized the 28th Annual Sikh Youth Gurmat Camp, in Maryland.

Held from July 19 to 27, the week-long camp brought together 120 youth, aged 6 to 20, from across the United States and Canada, for a unique blend of spiritual learning, cultural engagement, and recreational activities.

The camp focussed on deepening the participants' understanding of Sikh values and cultural heritage through workshops, competitions and discussions.

A key attraction was the Gurmukhi calligraphy workshop by Simranjit Singh from North Carolina. Singh also trained the participants in Table playing.

Ranjodh Singh and Khushpreet Kaur, also from North Carolina, led instruction in Sikh string instruments and Kavishri (Sikh poetry).

Special attention was given to martial arts training, with training being given in two martial arts forms. Deep Singh’s Gatka team from New York and Dr. Gurinderpal Singh Josen, an internationally recognized Karate instructor and NYPD officer led the training program.

Daily Keertan Divaans were led by Gurpreet Singh ‘Jalandhar’ from New York and Harkamal Singh from New Jersey.

Sikh string instruments, along with Punjabi Pictionary , speech and debate contests, Sikh History Jeopardy, and athletic tournaments in volleyball and basketball were also conducted during the camp.

The event also brought together a diverse group of Sikh professionals who shared their personal journeys and offered mentorship and career guidance to the next generation of Sikh leaders. The panel featured Vishavjit Singh, a.k.a. "Sikh Captain America" and TEDx speaker, Jasjit Singh, former Obama and Biden appointee and Joti Kaur, News Reporter, News 12 New Jersey.

Harjot Singh, Real Estate Professional, Dr. Kiranpreet Kaur, Chief of Gastroenterology, Hagerstown, MD, Harjot Singh, Federal Advocacy Manager, Sikh Coalition, Bhai Supreet Singh, Lead Educator, Basics of Sikhi were other key professionals on the panel who shared words of professional wisdom and encouragement to the young attendees.

GHISS Founder and President Gurdeep Singh presented awards to winners of various competitions during the closing ceremony. Special recognition was given to four youth who took Amrit in the past year. Best Camper Awards were presented to Guntas Singh, Joga Singh, and Harjas Singh from Maryland and Achraj Kaur from North Carolina.
